In Nigeria today the informal sector is filled with a lot of unskilled people trying to rip us off in the name of earning a living. A mechanic trains as an apprentice under another guy that does not have any formal education on how pistons work or how to read the technical specifications in an automobile manual. Now imagine if the owner of the garage is a certified auto-mechanic or mechanical engineer and the guys on the floor are certified auto technicians you will definitely get a better service and infact if you are not please you can engage them in the language they will understand. Iv had several mechanics confess to me that all they do is trial and error but God has been very merciful on us.
In the same way you can train welders, Electricians , Carpenters, Plumbers,Mason,Drivers etc.
Benefits:
- A technical certification can enable them to seek employment in industry, service sectors, hospitality, aviation, medicine, and transportation, among other fields.
- Reduce unemployment
- Better quality of service
- Informal Sector of the economy will be properly structure and becomes formal and taxed
- Reduced crime
- Technical college degree does not upend the prospects of getting a regular college education
- Give more people the opportunity to acquire some form of formal education
Our graduates go abroad to sweep floors, tend to customers at burger king, KFC, Subway etc everyday. Some of the people reading this collect the dollars and pounds that they send home without knowing what they do(atleast they are not stealing and earning a descent living). In the case of Dangote looking for graduate truck drivers, if anyone thinks it is degrading to be a certified truck driver they should'nt apply o but if their neighbor applied they better not ask them for money when they are broke. Shikena
No one is saying it doesn't come with its cost but the benefits most definitely out weight the cost. If I have to pay more to get a proper work done on my car once its cheaper than three or more failed attempts by an a uncertified mechanic and I will have to pay for those failed attempts and buy parts too.
That is what one will expect our elected leaders to try and advocate for instead of setting up various 3rd class uni's in the name of trying to provide education for everyone.
